Saudi Arabia’s energy system is shifting quickly. Under Vision 2030, the Kingdom is rapidly expanding solar and wind generation as it seeks to become a key player in the low-carbon era and create new avenues for industrial growth.
Vast access to land, windy terrain, along with some of the world’s highest solar irradiation makes the country an ideal home for large scale renewables.
In 2023, Saudi Arabia raised its renewable energy ambition to 130 gigawatts by 2030 making it one of the fastest-growing clean power markets in the world. To give a sense of scale, installed capacity stood at 6.5 GW in 2024 (GASTAT), while the target approaches India’s current solar and wind capacity, the world’s fourth-largest.
To achieve this, the Kingdom will need to add roughly 20 GW of capacity a year, a pace comparable to the recent renewable growth seen in major markets such as Germany.
